Solar Panel Pigeon Protection Mesh

The use of green energy alternatives has boomed in the UK, and many people are turning to solar panels to power their homes. One reason is the potential cost savings, while another is the eco credentials of using solar PV panels. In an increasingly eco-conscious world, it is great to see homeowners taking this step to protect the environment around them. However, many end up protecting rather more than they bargained for!

Solar panels provide the perfect, protected nesting site for Feral Pigeons. These birds need cover over their heads to next, and the small spaces between PV panels and rooftiles are warm and safe from both predators and the British weather. While one or two birds may not seem like a problem, they soon multiply, and this causes a number of problems.

Problems caused by Pigeons and other Birds

The material build-up of twigs, leaves and other debris underneath the panels can cause hotspots. Solar cells then overheat which can reduce the overall efficiency and even render the system completely useless. This material also then drops down, blocking gutters. Pigeons nesting under solar panels can also dislodge the wiring connecting the panels. This can cause the entire system to stop working, and potentially other short circuits within household electrics.

It’s not just under the panels that pigeons cause problems. Repeatedly walking on the panels can scratch the surface, while their droppings can coat the top, reducing the panels ability to capture sunlight. The droppings are also highly corrosive and can cause damage to the solar cells, as well as rooftiles.

There is also the issue of noise. Pigeons are not known to be quiet birds and having them scratch and stamp around on your roof in the early hours of the morning is not something most people want to hear.

Pigeons can be a Health and Safety Hazard

Perhaps the most pressing issues of pigeons nesting under residential solar panels are the risks to people’s health and safety. Pigeon faeces carries bacteria and pathogens that can cause serious illness, and in extreme cases blindness in humans if the droppings are accidentally ingested or get into broken skin. Even breathing the dried faeces in carries risks.

Feral Pigeons also carry mites. These are capable of jumping off the birds, going through a roof and then burrowing into clothes and furniture. This causes itchiness and, in some cases, allergic reactions in people.

How to prevent Pigeons nesting under Solar Panels

The most effective way to prevent pigeons nesting under solar PV panels is to install solar panel bird guards in the form of bird mesh. It is recommended that this mesh is professionally applied just after the completion of your solar panel installation. This prevents the pigeons and other birds from setting up nests by blocking off the space between the panels and rooftiles. The mesh can easily be removed to perform any maintenance yet remains strong enough to stop pigeons getting through.

Professional Bird Mesh Installation

SkyHawk Pest Management are qualified to install solar panel bird guards on residential PV solar panels. We use the highest standard equipment to ensure that pigeons are unable to access the space underneath your panels. The mesh is clipped securely around the edges of the PV panels, which is not only highly effective, but also protects the warranty on the panels. The mesh is also extremely discreet.

How Much?

The cost to protect the solar panels on an average size house is £495.00
